Use of Imported Inert Soils
On the key issue of funding works, Weller Designs have had frequent involvement in projects utilising imported inert soils to carry out golf course construction works. The planning process for such schemes is more complex, but Weller Designs have invaluable experience in this respect, and the benefits can be considerable in terms of providing the volumes of material needed to shape interesting golf course features, and if necessary tackle drainage or safety issues, and in creating a stream of income to offset construction costs.
Once permission has been achieved, successful implementation relies on good coordination between designers, site operators and specialist shapers; Weller Designs are able to bring together companies who have worked together successfully on golf course construction projects of this nature.
It is also important that works should be overseen to ensure that the finished product reflects the approved design. Overfilling of sites and failure to complete works within proposed timescales have in some instances upset local residents and led to adverse publicity for the use of imported inert soils in golf construction, but if the site is suitable and the design is of a high standard and is adhered to, it is a very valid recycling of surplus soils from local construction sites. As designers we are judged by the quality of the completed work so it is in our interest that works should be well monitored, planning conditions observed and the Local Planning Authority involved.
