News: Autumn 2007: A planning application is to be submitted in December 2007 for a major development at the Rose Bowl, home of Hampshire county cricket. This will involve the creation of a prestigious new hotel on one side of the cricket ground, flanked by new stands, together with the replacement of the existing nine-hole golf course with a new eighteen-hole layout designed by Weller Designs. The opening and closing holes are set around a large lake, adjacent to the cricket ground and new hotel, with the par 5 18th, featuring a dramatic island green, sure to become the signature hole.
Weller Designs have begun the design phase of a project to upgrade the facilities at the Cranfield Golf Academy, Chadwell Heath. This exciting development will see the existing driving range improved and supplemented by the creation of three nine-hole golf layouts, designed to test and improve the full range of golfing skills: a full-length nine-hole course, a par 3 course and "Waterworld", a pitching course set tightly around a sinuous lake complex.
A planning application has been submitted for the creation of Liverpool Sports Park, a complex of sporting facilities of which the major feature will be a par 3 golf course in which the layout is modelled on famous golf holes from around the world, ranging from the "Postage Stamp" at Troon to the "Island Hole" 17th at the TPC, Sawgrass.
In Scotland, construction work is well under way at East Kilbride where Weller Designs have, in association with Peter McEvoy, have designed the country's first purpose-built PowerPlay course for Playgolf Ltd. PowerPlay is a shortened but very strategic and competitive format of golf, played over a full-length nine-hole course, where each green offers a choice of two pin positions and the player nominating to aim for the more difficult one has the chance of doubling their points score for the hole.
Design work continues for the Savernake Club, the conversion of the Grade I listed Tottenham House and its parkland into a luxury hotel and golf course. Weller Designs are undertaking the detailed design work for Peter Alliss Golf, and are also responsible for the hard and soft landscape design of the non-golf areas of the site. This complex project has required close consultation with various interest groups, most notably English Heritage.
Abroad, Weller Designs are delighted to have formed an association with the National Golf Development Corporation (NGDC) in Russia. The NGDC, who also represent the interests of Arnold Palmer's design company in Russia, are actively seeking to promote the development of golf in their country, where the sport is in its infancy but seems likely to take-off in popularity in the near future.
Also overseas, construction is due to comence early in 2008 at Chintsa River, near to East London in South Africa. The 27-hole layout, designed by Peter McEvoy and Weller Designs, hugs the hillside above the mouth of the Chintsa River, offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.
